Few hold the reputation that Audemars Piguet does in the world of watchmaking. The Swiss heritage horology brand is world-renowned for its immaculate craftsmanship, surgical precision, and use of gold-standard materials, consistently blurring the lines between timepiece and art. The result? Heirloom-quality designs that stand the test of time without ever being loud. Now, through its partnership with Swatch, the luxury watchmaker is once again redefining horology and reaffirming its place in your collection.
First teased over Mother’s Day weekend, watch collectors and enthusiasts alike were split. There’s the familiarity and covetability of Audemars Piguet’s Royal Oak line, alongside Swatch’s penchant for bold, colourful designs. Today, we finally got our answer: Royal Pop, a lineup of eight pocket watches drawing inspiration from the Pop Art movement, as well as Audemars Piguet’s iconic Royal Oak collection.

Rendered in a spectrum of colour and geometry, the Royal Pop collection takes iconographies of Audemars Piguet and Swatch, and fuses them into something highly collectible. On the surface, the collaboration thrives on visual impact. But underneath the graphic finishes and Pop Art sensibilities lies a serious feat of watchmaking.
Each of the eight Swiss-made pocket watches is powered by Swatch’s SISTEM51 movement, now reworked into a new hand-wound format. Assembled entirely through automation, the movement offers over 90 hours of power reserve alongside a Nivachron™ balance spring developed in collaboration with Audemars Piguet. Beyond the mechanics, each model also comes fitted with a removable lanyard attachment, allowing the pocket watch to be worn around the neck or styled as desired. The crown, case, and lanyard attachment are all crafted from Bioceramic, while the watch head can be detached by unclipping the back from the attachment mechanism.

The movement itself becomes part of the design narrative. Visible through the transparent caseback, the intricate inner workings lend the watches a more tactile, almost exhibition-like quality, where engineering is treated as visual language rather than something to be concealed. The collection is split into two distinct interpretations: Six Lépine-style pocket watches featuring the crown at 12 o’clock with a minimalist two-hand display, and two Savonnette-inspired models with the crown repositioned at 3 o’clock and a small seconds counter sitting neatly at 6 o’clock.

Naturally, the Royal Oak’s signatures remain central to the collection’s identity. The recurring motif of eight—seen in the octagonal silhouette and hexagonal screws—references the original Royal Oak bezel, which has remained one of modern watchmaking’s most enduring designs since 1972. Here, those familiar elements are amplified through a more playful lens. In the HUIT BLANC model, for instance, each of the eight screws appears in a different colour, transforming one of horology’s most recognisable design details into something boldly graphic.

Elsewhere, the collection continues to echo traditional Audemars Piguet finishing. The textured “Petite Tapisserie” dial motif makes an appearance across all eight models, while the satin-brushed surfaces on the bezel and caseback nod to the finishing techniques associated with the original Royal Oak. Swatch’s proprietary Bioceramic material, meanwhile, introduces a more contemporary tactility. Made using ceramic powder blended with biosourced material derived from castor oil, it gives the watches a smooth matte finish that feels lightweight yet substantial in hand.
There are smaller details, too, that reward a closer look. The barrel drum doubles as a functional power reserve indicator, shifting visually depending on the tension of the mainspring. Sapphire crystal fronts and backs add durability, anti-reflective coatings improve clarity, and Grade A Super-LumiNova® ensures legibility after dark. Even the audible click produced when attaching the removable watch head has been intentionally engineered into the experience, giving the collection its own acoustic signature.
