On Lakshani Wijetunge’s chest is a tattoo that says “everything begins with faith”. “A lot of the biggest turning points in my life happened unexpectedly, and in the best way possible. It’s a reminder to have trust in God, in myself, and having faith that there’s a bigger path unfolding, even when things still feels uncertain,” she says.

Known to her friends and followers as Elle, the Sri Lankan beauty influencer has taken several leaps of faith: Moving to Singapore in 2021, stepping away from her corporate job to focus on her burgeoning career as a content creator in 2023. Dealing with years of acne led her to share her experiences and product recommendations online. With encouragement from her husband, Jeewantha, those tentative Instagram posts that only showed half her face gradually evolved into make-up tutorials for women who share her skin tone and skincare concerns

“At first, make-up felt like a shield that helped me feel more confident in my own skin. Over time, it became less about covering up and more about creativity and experimenting with textures, colours, and techniques suited to my skin. I take inspiration from Zendaya and Zoe Saldaña who always look beautiful, elegant and effortless, while remaining authentic. That journey is also why I’m passionate about sharing make-up for darker complexions and textured skin. I know how meaningful it can be to see someone who looks like you.”

“My style evolved in a similar way. I used to play it safe due to my conservative upbringing and personal insecurities, but moving to Singapore exposed me to new influences and perspectives, which helped me explore different silhouettes and styles. I get my wardrobe inspiration from designers like Anthony Vaccarello, Simon Porte Jacquemus, Alex Perri, Patricia Bonaldi and Conna Walker—minimalist yet bold, structured yet feminine designs that sit beautifully on the body.”
