Iman Fandi and Indonesian singer VIDI are making waves with their duet “We Time,” the lead single from Iman’s debut album That Girl. The pair, who first crossed paths on brand trips years ago, reconnected to collaborate on this vibrant track. Reflecting on their creative journey, Iman and VIDI share insights into their inspirations, the challenges they faced, and what fans can anticipate in the coming year.
For Iman, That Girl represents a deeply personal journey of self-discovery, resilience, and celebration. She recounts how the album began to take shape after an impromptu session in Kuala Lumpur with Tatsuro Miller and Claudia Tan. The result was the title track, “That Girl,” which provided the creative direction for the entire project. “I knew I wanted to tell a story and offer a variety of emotions and genres for people to connect with,” she says. “It’s about a girl discovering herself, growing in strength, and evolving both mentally and emotionally.”

SELF-DOUBT
While creating the album was an exciting process, it came with its share of challenges. Iman candidly admits that she had to leave out some songs that weren’t quite ready or up to her standard. “Those tracks were close to me, so it was tough,” she says. The album’s release was also delayed, prompting moments of self-doubt. Despite these setbacks, Iman is proud of what she has achieved and is eager for fans to hear the songs. Her favourites include the title track for its Afrobeats and Amapiano influences, “Try Again” for its motivational message of taking risks, and “Leave You On Read,” a playful anthem that’s sure to resonate with her audience. Performing live also holds a special place in her heart, particularly when it comes to songs like “Open Sun (Original Mix),” which she recalls performing in Kuala Lumpur to an enthusiastic crowd.
The recording process was as enlightening as it was rewarding. Much of the work took place during late-night sessions in Kuala Lumpur, requiring Iman, a self-confessed morning person, to adjust her routine. However, these experiences proved to be valuable, allowing her to learn from other artists and producers while forging new friendships.

SERENDIPITY
Iman and VIDI’s collaboration on “We Time” was a natural choice given their history. Iman recalls meeting VIDI on a brand trip in Sydney years ago, and the connection stayed with her. When it came to selecting a male artist for the duet, VIDI felt like the perfect fit—not just for his talent but also for their shared ties to Indonesia. Despite their busy schedules, the process of working together was enjoyable. Filming the music video in Indonesia was a highlight for both.
The lyrics of “We Time” hold special meaning for the duo. For Iman, the line, “I’m independent, I’m clearly so self-sufficient, I promise you I don’t need you, but I just think about you always,” encapsulates her duality. As the only girl among four brothers, she grew up learning to be self-reliant but admits she’s still a “soft girl” at heart. This lyric, she explains, reflects her personality’s blend of strength and vulnerability. For VIDI, the lyric, “I’ve been so patient but it feels like it’s been ages, think I’m slowly going crazy hate to say it baby,” resonates deeply. It reminds him of his experiences with long-distance relationships, where time seemed to stretch endlessly.

INSPIRATION
Both Iman and VIDI draw inspiration from influential figures in music. Iman admires Rihanna, Zara Larsson, Dua Lipa, and Sabrina Carpenter, finding motivation in their performances and growth. For VIDI, Bruno Mars remains a consistent source of inspiration, embodying the full package of singer, songwriter, and performer. These influences shape their approach to music and live performances.
Iman’s pre-show rituals include a gym session, honey tea, and a few rounds on her Nintendo Switch to calm her nerves. As the show approaches, she becomes quieter and jumps around to warm up. VIDI, on the other hand, enjoys a group prayer and a lively chant with his band, Bandana, to get into the zone and warm up his voice.
When it comes to advice for aspiring singers, both emphasise the importance of individuality. Iman encourages experimentation to find a unique sound and voice, urging newcomers to be open to criticism and to persevere through challenges. “Success often comes with a few obstacles,” she says. VIDI echoes this sentiment, advising aspiring artists to stay true to their character, as that’s what sets them apart.
