Alicia Vikander knows a thing or two about strong women. She herself has been touted as one of the most versatile actors of her generation, and is well-known for playing an eclectic list of roles that demonstrate an impressive range—from a humanoid robot in Ex Machina, to video game star Lara Croft, to Gerda Wegener, the wife of artist and transgender women Lili Elbe, who she played in The Danish Girl. (The role won her an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress.)

Fitting, then, that the actor travelled to Marrakech this week for Louis Vuitton's new High Jewellery collection, Mythica, which was all about celebrating the strength and resilience of women. "It's about a heroine and about a woman who is able to narrate her own very personal journey," explained Vikander of the collection, which was comprised of 110 jewellery pieces created using the most exceptional gemstones.

During her trip, the actor caught up with ELLE UK to talk about the new High Jewellery collection, share her tips for visiting Marrakech, and discuss her upcoming film, The Worst, which she'll be shooting this summer alongside Keira Knightley, Jamie Dornan and Erin Kellyman.

"There were 11 themes in this presentation of the jewellery collection. I really liked the Totem theme. And there was a piece that was this beautiful kind Moroccan style thick collar. It really made me feel very grounded in a wonderful way. When I put it on it was very heavy. I definitely felt like the heroine wearing that one. There were also a pair of earrings that were was stunning."

"Sometimes high jewellery collections speak to quite floral themes, and I thought it was so interesting to see there was a lot of kind of surprising elements of [this Louis Vuitton collection] that they have put together in these pieces. There were quite a few quite modern pieces, which I really liked, and there were a few very modern earrings. Those were the ones that I definitely had my eye on."

"I've been to Marrakesh quite a few times. I've been on a motorcycle trip with my husband—before kids!—so this is my fourth or fifth time. I do care a lot about architecture and design, so for me to walk around at the Medina and walk into all these beautiful, gorgeous riads is such a joy. I am the person who can get lost looking at rugs for 10 hours."

"The greatest memory I have is being on this journey throughout the landscapes and going down towards the coast. We had some people that we met and who introduced us to people in some of these Berber villages where we got to come and stay. It’s amazing to be able to immerse yourself in the culture of a country like that. There's some great tourist destinations here, a lot of them that I've been to, beautiful gardens and museums. But I always think try and go off beaten part, that’s always the way to go when you come and visit a new place."

On exploring personal style

"I do have a style or way of dressing that’s obviously me: it’s something that is very classic, and something where I use certain accents to be able to kind of colour my own style. But then it's interesting, in the summer, suddenly I go all boho and start wearing a lot of dresses and patterns that I normally don't have in the rest of my wardrobe. Suddenly, when the Scandinavian woman gets a bit of sunshine, gets very excited in that direction.

That's also nice with the work I've done with Louis Vuitton, I really like dressing up for the red carpets and I’ve been travelling with them for years. I do love the fact that I've been able to explore my own style and personality through their clothes as well, and think, ‘Where am I going to be? And what kind of version of myself do I want to explore?'"

When I look at the things I've chosen, they're all very simple. I’m wearing a black dress tonight, and last night it was white. Now I’m wearing full cream. I think that's because I know that we're here to highlight these jewellery pieces, and I want to let them speak for themselves. Very often you create your outfit, and then add the jewellery. This time around, I'm very much focused on the jewellery piece I'm wearing, and then building my outfit from there.

"I remember maybe 14 years ago, when I wore my first couture dress. It was so heavy, and it was an incredible feeling. The craftsmanship really is a sensory experience, when you put it on."

"I’m the kind of girl that has a very a basic wardrobe that I really love. I care about my T shirts that I really love, and my jeans, and then being able to pair it with beautiful piece of jewellery. Or if it's a fitted jacket or a great pair of shoes, there's always a way for you to kind of make ‘The Look’ with one of those statement pieces."

"My iPad, my Augustine Bader cream that I wear (I always carry a moisturiser in my handbag). And then I would choose a pack of card or Yahtzee. It's something my girlfriends and I started to do when we were 20, and it's still something we do. So if you sit at a restaurant or a cafes, you always have the option of playing a game."

"Gin rummy. Or poker. I like hosting, invite people for pizza and tequila and poker. But it's very gentle. It's like a €20 (S$29.90) buy in."

On her earliest Louis Vuitton memory

"My biggest memory is when I did one of my first shoots for them. It was with Nicolas, for his fashion collection, and it was in Barcelona. We arrived on the motorbike there too. I pinched myself being there, so far away. It was a very fast journey, in the sense of these luxury brands, with pieces or bags I had seen in magazines. And then I got to step onto one of those sets. Everyone was so kind, especially Nicolas. I just felt so kind of well taken care of and seen."

"When I was a young teenager, my girlfriends did buy fashion magazines, and I tended to buy interior design or architectural magazines. But it's just different sides of the same coin, and that's something you can also see with Louis Vuitton. If you look at just every set or any of the places Nicolas chooses to go, that's a part of his vision. His collections are very much also a part of the world where he sets his shows."

On the role clothes play within film

"I think, in film, maybe one of the most pivotal days on each project that I do is the costume fittings. You’re walking around at home having all these fantasies and ideas and imaginations about a character or film and what you're going to do, but it's not until you come to your first costume fitting that I feel like when it's so obvious. Suddenly I just try things on, and it's very clear, the character kind of just emerges at that point in a very organic way. I like to find characters from a very physical point of view, and actually, when I find the outfit, suddenly I start to move differently."

On getting into character

"Obviously you pull from yourself for every single role that you do. I mean my own experiences and my emotions, and those are my tools for any part that I take on. So in one moment, even with the characters that are different than me, or going through life journeys or making conscious choices that are very different from mine, somehow I've made the preparation work to thoroughly understand why this character could go on this certain chosen path or journey. I find that the most interesting thing about my work is that you can taken back and surprised by having understanding for characters that are that are not me."

On her next acting project

"I'm going to be in France in Provence this summer, doing a film called The Worst. It’s a dark comedy, and I've been longing to do something in that genre for a long time. I think I'm going to enjoy myself. It's a very wild, eccentric, fabulous and absolutely terrible woman that I get to play, which I'm looking forward to. She's so hideous."
