Many recognise Mackenyu Arata as the skilled swordsman Roronoa Zoro from Netflix’s live-action adaptation of the hit Japanese anime One Piece (2023). However, longtime fans know him best as the bright-eyed actor who initially found fame appearing in Japanese films and dramas. As a Japanese-American born in Los Angeles, Mackenyu attended Beverly Hills High School, and spent his younger years picking up hobbies like horseback riding and training to be a martial artist.
For Mackenyu, a career in the spotlight seemed destined. Raised amid the industry by his father, 1970s action legend Sonny Chiba, he made his early onscreen debuts in the series Team Astro and the 2007 film Oyaji.

Mackenyu’s acting career truly took off in 2015, beginning with supporting roles in Japanese dramas such as Yume wo Ataeru. Like many rising actors, he also joined the Kamen Rider franchise that same year. But it was his nuanced portrayal of Wataya Arata—a Karuta prodigy—in Chihayafuru Parts 1 and 2 that marked his breakout. His striking looks and effortlessly cool presence captivated audiences, setting the stage for his rapid ascent. The role earned him the Japan Academy Award for Newcomer of the Year in 2017, a milestone that affirmed his potential and even inspired him to adopt his character’s surname.

Mackenyu has since cemented his presence by taking on a wide spectrum of roles that showcase both his versatility and innate on-screen charisma. His filmography spans everything from sensitive romantic leads to intense, dramatic characters. Internationally, he has expanded his reach with roles in Pacific Rim: Uprising (2018) and Knights of the Zodiac (2023), further solidifying his global profile.
Beyond television and film, Mackenyu has boldly explored other artistic avenues, reinforcing his status as one of Japan’s most promising multi-faceted talents. In 2016, he made his stage debut in the musical adaptation of Hana Yori Dango, taking on the prominent role of Sojiro Nishikado, a member of the elite F4. He later charmed audiences once more through voice acting, lending his voice to the animated fantasy film NiNoKuni (2019) alongside renowned actor Kento Yamazaki.
In 2021, Mackenyu was cast as Roronoa Zoro in the live-action adaptation of One Piece, a role that demanded six-day-a-week workouts and intensive sword training. This was far from his first experience in live-action anime adaptations; he had already made his mark in action films such as Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure (2017), Brave: Gunjou Senki (2021), and Rurouni Kenshin: The Final (2021). His athleticism, imposing presence, and years of martial arts training made him the perfect fit for these physically demanding roles.
Beyond his acclaim as a versatile actor, Mackenyu has established himself as a style icon, attending high-profile events hosted by luxury names such as Cartier and Fendi. Set to reprise his role in the highly anticipated second season of One Piece next March, fans eagerly await the adrenaline-fuelled action he is sure to bring to the screen.
