You may know her as the effervescent Posy Li from season four of Netflix’s Bridgerton, but a career in acting was not always in the cards for Isabella Wei. The 21-year-old Hong Kong actress spent most of her youth training as a dancer, and she spent years performing with the Hong Kong Youth Arts Foundation (HKYAF) where she later developed a passion for acting.

Wei’s first brush with acting came at 16, in the form of the local theatre production #hashtag with HKYAF. In an interview with Vogue Hong Kong, Wei shared that she found her role as a villain particularly difficult, and that she struggled to commit to the character due to the emotional toll it took on her. She carried herself through the project with advice from her friends to give it her all and “leave it on the stage,” words that would shape her attitude as an actress.

While still in high school, Wei’s career hit a turning point when she auditioned and landed a role in Netflix’s 1899, a multilingual mystery sci-fi series following an ensemble cast of immigrants on a steamship to London. What she thought might have been a one-time opportunity became her breakout role, opening doors to roles in the 2024 film The Crow and the spy-action thriller Black Doves.

Now based in London, Wei cut her teeth on those gritty, emotional early roles, learning to push past her anxieties over acting and connecting with her own vulnerability. When she landed Bridgerton in 2024, Posy became her first more light-hearted screen role. Despite the bubbly disposition of the character, Wei also thought it important to go beyond the comedic relief Posy often provides.

Wei’s Posy is cheerful and sweet, but carries a strong sense of justice and an earnest desire to speak her mind in spite of her shyness, the actress told Grumpy Magazine. Amid the show’s regency setting, her playful honesty and refusal to conform are refreshing traits Wei focused on bringing to life, especially as the character plays an integral role in how the season’s storyline unfolds.

On Bridgerton, Wei shared that joining the cast with a family of East Asian women—which includes Yerin Ha’s Sophie Baek, Katie Leung as her mother, Araminta Gun and Michelle Mao as her sister Rosamund Li—each more different than the next, also took pressure off the need to represent her culture and focus on her performance. “It’s like we, as Asian women, are just like anyone else in this Bridgerton world. We experience love, we can be dramatic, and we can be feisty,” she said.

With season four complete, fans now eagerly await Wei’s return in future seasons of Bridgerton in hopes that Posy’s own love story from the books will be explored. In the meantime, the actress is already in the midst of filming her next project, which she remains tight-lipped about. However, she also voiced her hopes to eventually have another go at a villainous role, despite her initial difficulties with one during her first foray into acting. Wherever Wei’s next projects take her, she now has years of experience under her belt and a loyal following of fans excited to watch her blossom on screen.
