Try as you might, as you age, you unwittingly become a hoarder of some sort. At some point, you take stock of your health cabinet and realise you could open your own apothecary of supplements and healing elixirs. After all, we all need vitamins in our daily routines to support bone health, energy, immunity, and even skin radiance. Separate capsules targeting specific concerns are important, but if you’ve scrolled on social media lately, you’ve noticed an uptick in interest around multivitamins. One might assume it’s just another beauty fad; however, multivitamins are not new and are just as essential in our daily routine.

“Multivitamins help fill in the holes that might be in your diet. While we all try to eat well, the reality is that most of us are short on time and can’t always eat enough fruits, veggies, whole grains, and other nutrient-rich ingredients each day,” says Frances Largeman-Roth, RDN, and author of Everyday Snack Tray. Of course, they don’t take the place or carry the same impact as your targeted supplements, but they can serve as the fuel to get the engine started until you’re a well-oiled machine. Pro tip: Consistency is paramount. “A multivitamin should be consistently taken daily. Some may even need to be taken twice daily. Be sure to read the directions before taking any supplement,” Largeman-Roth adds.

Key ingredients: Vitamin E, selenium, folate
Usage: 1 tbsp a day
Size: 16 fl oz

Best Overall

Liquid Morning Multivitamin + Hair Growth, $44, Mary Ruth's.
You’ve either been fed an advertisement or watched a video testimonial of this popular multivitamin, which has fans on every platform and over 14,000 Amazon reviews singing its praises. An offshoot of its sister product, the OG liquid multivitamin in the peach-orange flavor, this tasty dragonfruit version keeps its star ingredient, lustriva, to target hair growth. Other standout vitamins include vitamins A, C, E, and even B12.
Key ingredients: Lustriva
Usage: 2 tbsps a day
Size: 30 fl oz
An ELLE editor says: “I’ve always loved the original peach orange flavor and was never swayed to ditch the formula even after seeing reviewers complain about its taste because the results are too good to care. As someone who chopped her hair twice in one year due to mismanagement, I started taking this multivitamin daily and watched my hair grow to its pre-chop length in a matter of months. Slow and steady wins the race, so don’t expect results overnight. However, my hair is thriving, and I feel much more energetic in the mornings even when I don’t get a full night’s rest.”—Nerisha Penrose, Beauty Commerce Editor
Best For Pre- And Post- Pregnancy

Our expert says: “I’m a breastfeeding mom, so I’m still taking a vitamin that contains additional nutrients to help support me in the postpartum stage. I’m a fan of MaryRuth’s Prenatal and Postnatal Liquid Multivitamin. It’s a clean-label project certified and tested for 200+ toxins and contaminants, which is important because everything I put in my body remains in my milk and is ultimately passed to my baby. Many pregnant women have issues taking pills, and this delicious multi is so easy to add to smoothies, making it a great choice.”—Frances Largeman-Roth, RDN

What factors should you consider when shopping in a multivitamin?
The most important thing to consider is what issues you want the supplement to address. Of course, always consult your doctor first. Largeman-Roth explains that age and lifestyle are key factors to consider. “For example, if you’re trying to conceive or are pregnant or breastfeeding, you should be taking a multivitamin that includes enough folate (600mcg) to support the healthy development of a baby. On the other hand, if you’re post menopausal, you’ll want a multivitamin that has the right amount of iron for that stage of life,” she says.
Which is better—liquid, gel, and capsule?
Ultimately, it comes down to personal preference, although liquid formulas tend to have better absorption. “Liquid multivitamins are great for people who dislike swallowing pills. They also don’t need to be broken down like pills do, increasing their absorption. This is especially important for individuals with conditions affecting their gastrointestinal tract, such as Crohn’s disease or celiac disease,” she explains.
“Gummies are excellent for people on the go. Plus, most of them taste good, which can help form the daily routine of taking a multivitamin,” she adds. Capsules, on the other hand, travel well and don't require any special storage. “Also, the shelf life for capsules is generally longer than with gummies or liquid options,” Largeman-Roth says.
