Demi Han’s editorial concept, Kicking in Colours, is full of movement and energy. Inspired by chapteh, the childhood game familiar to many Singaporeans, the 24-year-old transformed playful kicks into expressive high-fashion poses.
“The concept started from thinking about what a good summer day would look like,” she says, and the idea had first come to her during a LASALLE Leadership Programme activity, where students spent the afternoon playing outdoors. “We played chapteh as one of the games in the programme, and it just felt very joyful, upbeat, and spontaneous.” That memory was what evolved into a full editorial concept rooted in the joy she associates with Singapore—something personal and familiar to her.

Finding out she had been selected as one of the project’s three finalists was an emotional moment for Demi. “I screamed when I received the email,” she laughs. “I’m not even exaggerating when I say ELLE is one of the reasons I fell in love with fashion. So being featured by ELLE Singapore is a dream come true.”

Throughout the process, Demi shared that she learnt the importance of having a clear direction while remaining adaptable when challenges arise. “It is always best to have a clear direction on what you want to achieve, but sometimes your concept might not work out exactly the way you planned,” she explains. “You just have to solve the problems with what you have and try your best to make your vision come true.”

Stepping onto an ELLE set for the first time also pushed her out of her comfort zone. “I was nervous in the morning,” she admits. “This was my first time working with such a big team. Previously, I only had experience with working on my own in school projects. But on set, it was a collaborative effort, and I was really excited and focused.” More than anything, however, she says that she acquired “the confidence to speak up and communicate,”—skills that are essential within a professional creative environment.
