For the Greeks, the snake represents rebirth and rejuvenation. For the Chinese, it is associated with wisdom, charm, elegance, and transformation. People born in this zodiac are believed to be intuitive and intelligent beings, with an enigmatic charisma that naturally attracts others into their orbit—even more so now that they have one of these to accentuate their style.

From IWC Schaffhausen comes the Portofino Automatic Moon Phase 37 Year of the Snake Special Edition (of 500 pieces), which celebrates the Lunar New Year with a rich burgundy dial setting the stage for the moon phase display at the 12 o’clock position. Turn the watch around and you’ll find a gold-plated serpent-designed rotor to wind the impressive 5-day power reserve.
Jaeger-LeCoultre’s manual-wind Reverso Tribute Enamel “Snake” presents the same peekaboo effect. The made-to-order limited edition is a feat of enamellling and engraving that has been undertaken by the brand’s Métiers Rares atelier: The snake on the reverse side of the case has been hand-drawn and hand-engraved in the midst of a glossy black Grand Feu enamel background. This takes 16 hours to achieve, while the black Grand Feu enamel dial at the front requires eight hours.

Over at Longines, it’s the brand’s Conquest Heritage that has slithered up to the plate. On the case back is a snake with a Lingzhi mushroom in its mouth, designed by Chinese artist Wu Jian'an, who took inspiration from the famed Chinese tale, ”The Legend of the White Snake”. Limited to 2,205 pieces, this automatic 40mm watch bears a gradient red dial for added good luck.

Never one to do things by half, Franck Muller has unveiled its Silhouette CX Snake to honour this year’s zodiac animal. A brand new case shape—an evolution of the brand’s mainstay Curvex CX case—pays true tribute to the serpent with sensuous asymmetric curves that’s further accentuated with the undulating snow-set emerald snake on the dial. This Asia-Pacific exclusive timepiece is limited to just 28 pieces.

Arguably the prettiest of the lot is Dior’s Grand Soir Year of the Snake. The mother-of-pearl dial is adorned with a Toile de Jouy-inspired setting that’s rich in details and textures, thanks to three-dimensional leaves and flowers crafted from more mother-of-pearl. An opaline snake with rose gold detailing explores her serene environment as rose gold butterflies flit above her. Just 38 pieces are available of this automatic beauty.
