If you’re someone who likes to pack for every possible scenario, chances are you want everything within easy reach when you travel. That means a carry-on and personal item that can hold it all, paired with luggage designed with smart compartments and enough room for the many pouches that make navigating airports and long-haul flights a little more seamless.
Somewhere between scrolling through my favourite travel content creator Rilee Smith's TikTok reviews and demos, and revisiting past travel memories, I was reminded of a conversation with South Korean actress Mun Ka-young, whom I interviewed at Capella Singapore last year while she was in town for Tumi’s Discovering Asra campaign. Admittedly, she's an overpacker who values design and practicality in equal measure.
This sent me down a rabbit hole on Tumi’s website, where I discovered the 19 Degree Aluminum International Carry-On. On paper, it ticked all the right boxes. Visually, it was just as compelling. But the real question remained: Was it truly worth the hype? I found my answer en route to New York Fashion Week—a trip that involved overpacking look after look—where I put the carry-on through its paces.

Built with a durable frame-system opening, the 19 Degree Aluminum International Carry-On comes equipped with two TSA-integrated combination locks, a three-stage push-button telescoping handle, retractable top and side carry handles, and four dual-spinning wheels for smooth manoeuvrability. Protective bumpers and a built-in hanger bracket add to its considered design. Inside, you’ll find a zip divider, two mesh zip pockets, a card pocket, and an additional hanger bracket to keep belongings neatly organised. Measuring 56 × 35.5 × 23 cm, the carry-on weighs 5.144kg and offers a 31L capacity. In other words, compact enough for international travel, yet surprisingly generous for considered overpacking.
As an editor who travels frequently for work, my luggage needs to accommodate multiple outfits for various events, my tech gear for working and content creation, plus all my other bits and bobs.

In terms of size, the 19 Degree Aluminum International Carry-On fits most airlines’ cabin requirements. If you’re worried, Tumi also offers a handy feature on its website that allows you to check compatibility against the airline you’re flying with.
Put to the test during New York Fashion Week, the carry-on comfortably fit two pairs of trousers, two knitted tops, a pair of sneakers, a paperback, a hairbrush, a handful of socks and undergarments, a small toiletries bag, and a few small souvenirs without feeling overstuffed.

Post-NYFW, I travelled to Hong Kong for the unveiling of COS’ newly revamped store along Queen’s Road Central. For this trip, I challenged myself to go carry-on only so I could breeze through the airport and skip baggage claim entirely. I packed eight outfits, two sets of sleepwear, sufficient undergarments and socks, toiletries and skincare essentials, my chargers, and books into the 19 Degree Aluminum International Carry-On, plus a personal item. Everything fit—including what I picked up along the way: More skincare, snacks, and souvenirs.
Overall, the 19 Degree Aluminum International Carry-On held up well across both trips. It’s sturdy, compact, and will fit everything you need without fuss. The built-in compartments are useful, the wheels glide effortlessly, the multi-stop handle works like a charm, and the TSA locks perform without issue—though having to undo two locks one by one can be slightly tiresome. The upside? Each lock has a different combination, offering added peace of mind and maximum security.

Compared to polycarbonate carry-ons, the aluminium shell feels markedly sturdier and more protective—especially when navigating overhead bins and tightly packed cabins. The trade-off, of course, is weight. Where lighter materials win on ease, the 19 Degree wins on structure, security, and reassurance.
Like all aluminum luggage, it does pick up scuffs over time. Rather than detracting from its appeal, these marks feel like a visual record of journeys taken, adding character and reinforcing its role as a hardworking travel companion rather than something to be kept pristine.
More than anything, this is the carry-on I reach for when I want to move through airports without friction while knowing everything I need is secure, organised, and exactly where it should be.
If you’re a frequent flyer who values durability, smooth manoeuvrability, and polished design—and you mostly travel on full-service airlines—the Tumi 19 Degree Aluminum International Carry-On is a worthy investment. It’s thoughtfully designed, genuinely functional, and built to withstand the demands of repeated travel. However, if your journeys skew towards budget airlines (hello, Ryanair) or carriers with strict cabin weight limits, its heft may prove more of a hindrance than a help.
