The uniforms of girlhood and womanhood have been a constant source of fascination for Miuccia Prada over her decades-long career. Through them, she explores the codes, contradictions and cliches of femininity. Over the last few seasons at Miu Miu, she has been drawn to the idea of women freely building on what came before to create new signifiers for modern femininity. She continues expanding on that idea in the brand’s Holiday 2024 collection, where conventions and dress codes collide—the collegiate with the corporate, the mannish with the girlish, the playful with the prim. The effect is a high-impact, low-key style that looks unaffected and nonchalantly thrown together.

On one hand, there are preppy ribbed knit vests and polos in bright sporting-flag colours, alongside schoolgirl pinafores in sober grey cotton. On the other are tailored camel chore jackets and grey wool blazers, both with built-in, scrubs-blue cuffs. There are pleated tennis dresses, cut high on the thigh; but there are also baggy stonewashed jeans, worn with thick leather belts and boy-style logo briefs peeking out from above the waistband.

The accessories continue the collection’s freewheeling, anything-goes attitude, with pieces that range from very serious to super adorable to downright unexpected. The Beau bag looks like a blown-up pencil case, while the Aventure evokes a vintage pocketbook from the 50s. There are baseball caps, unironic reflector shades, mini bags, even accessories for the bags—playful charms known as tricks. Some of these tricks come in the form of Miu Miu’s greatest hits, like the miniskirt and the blue poplin shirt.

The brand’s ongoing New Balance partnership added another layer of everyday effortlessness to the collection—most exciting of all was the sneaker-mule hybrid that manages to toe the line between something that looks so strange yet something you never knew you wanted so badly.
