For those who were impressed by the sheer number of debuts during the spring/summer 2026 season (15, for anyone counting), the year(s) of industry musical chairs is not over yet. This morning, Balmain announced Antonin Tron as its new creative director. The French designer succeeds Olivier Rousteing, who departed last week after leading the storied French house for 14 years. Rousteing was the first Black designer to helm a major luxury French fashion house and had one of the longest-standing tenures currently left in the industry.

“I am deeply honoured to be joining Balmain, and grateful to Mr. Rachid and Matteo for entrusting me with this extraordinary House,” Tron said in a statement. “I wish to express my gratitude to Olivier Rousteing for building Balmain into the global brand it is today. Balmain has a truly inspiring history. At its heart, the House embodies savoir-faire, culture, sensuality, and elegance—fashion that is radiant, precise, and bold. This resonates deeply with me, and I feel privileged to have the opportunity to build on this incredible legacy.”

Tron first founded his brand Atlein in 2016, quickly garnering industry attention and the First Collections Prize at the 2018 ANDAM Awards. Many of his designs took everyday materials like jersey and transformed them through a high-fashion lens. In his more recent work, the designer has leaned into the structural staple silhouette trend, specifically outerwear, that has swept across many luxury designer runways. Atlein’s last fashion show was during the fall/winter 2025 season and drew strong parallels to the elevated casualwear direction that Rousteing had been experimenting with as of late—a synergy that potentially points to where he will take Balmain.

Tron now joins the second wave of debuts that the industry can look forward to in the coming seasons. Others include Meryll Rogge at MarniRachel Scott and Demna’s first official runway shows at Proenza Schouler and Gucci, respectively; Maria Grazia Chiuri at Fendi; and Grace Wales Bonner at Hermès—though Wales Bonner won’t officially show on the runway until January 2027, leaving ample time for further anticipation.
