Across cultures and centuries, the horse has stood as an emblem of noble strength and drive. In Chinese tradition, it represents independence, strength, energy and forward motion—qualities that naturally resonate with the world of high watchmaking. Horology is, after all, a field in which time’s forward march is measured through mechanical precision and artistic expression.

With the dawn of the Year of the Horse, is it any surprise then that watchmakers would turn to this storied symbol to produce timepieces that blend cultural storytelling, decorative craftsmanship and technical excellence? From enamelled masterpieces to high-performance movements, these watches interpret the majestic animal as a living spirit that illustrates the onward charge of time.

Jaeger-LeCoultre’s latest editions in its Reverso Tribute Enamel series are some of the best examples of this. Commemorating both the Lunar New Year and the Reverso’s origins in polo, the trio of ‘Xu Beihong’ limited editions sees the watch’s swivelling case play canvas to miniature paintings once again. Each features a different hand-painted enamel reproduction of an ink wash horse painting by Xu Beihong, a pioneering figure of 20th century Chinese art, whose depictions of horses conveyed movement with emotional force.

Each caseback requires around 80 hours of enamel miniature painting, all executed within the Manufacture’s Métiers Rares atelier. On the dial, grand feu enamel overlays a hand-guilloché pattern, in colours that echo those of traditional Chinese landscape paintings. Beneath this artistry beats the manually-wound Calibre 822, a slender movement that offers a 42-hour power reserve. Limited to just 10 pieces per design, these Reversos are wearable works of art.

At Vacheron Constantin, horological storytelling is manifested in the Métiers d’Art Legend of the Chinese Zodiac Year of the Horse. The dial in hand-engraved gold and grand feu enamel, depicts a dynamic scene of a sculpted horse in mid-stride against a three-dimensional landscape. To preserve the visual integrity of the artwork, the watchmaker turned to its automatic Calibre 2460 G4 once more for its four-aperture display—for the hours, minutes, day and date. Offered in platinum or pink gold, and limited to 25 pieces for each, the watch embodies Vacheron Constantin’s conviction that artistic expression thrives most when matched by uncompromising technical ingenuity.

At Piaget, the Altiplano Zodiac Horse Edition is a masterclass in Métiers d’Art. Created in collaboration with famed enameller Anita Porchet, the dial is built in layers. Its white gold base is first hand-engraved with the Maison’s signature Palace Décor textured finish before the application of grand feu and cloisonné enamelling on the horse relief motif. Baguette- and brilliant-cut diamonds are set on the bezel, dial and lugs, while the crown is
capped with a rose-cut diamond.

Beneath this gemset enamelled masterpiece lies the watchmaker’s ultra-thin, hand-wound 830P calibre—just 2.5mm thick—with a power reserve of 60 hours. Limited to 18 pieces, the watch is an embodiment of Piaget’s Extraleganza philosophy, where elegance and extravagance coexist in perfect harmony. The results are a shimmering, glittering watch animated by the play of light and shadow.

In addition to its horse-shaped rotor, IWC Schaffhausen’s steel Portugieser Automatic 42 Year of the Horse bears a horse motif at its power reserve indicator located at 3 o’clock. Photo: Courtesy of IWC Schaffhausen

IWC Schaffhausen’s interpretation is subtler, yet no less symbolic. The Portugieser Automatic 42 Year of the Horse expresses the theme through a clean, refined design and serious mechanical muscle. Its burgundy sunray dial is framed by the box-shaped sapphire crystals on the front and back that lend the watch a slimmer, more elegant profile. Gold hands and appliques contrast against the deep wine hue, while the classic Portugieser layout—with a small seconds counter at 9 o’clock and power reserve indicator at 3 o’clock—remains reassuringly familiar.

The tribute to the Chinese zodiac animal reveals itself through the sapphire caseback. Inside, the in-house Calibre 52011 features a gold-plated rotor shaped like a galloping horse to celebrate motion both symbolically and mechanically. Equipped with IWC’s Pellaton winding system and ceramic components, the twin barrel movement delivers an impressive seven-day power reserve. This limited edition of 500 pieces is delivered with interchangeable alligator straps in burgundy and black.

Longines, a brand that shares strong bonds with the equestrian world, takes a similarly understated approach with its Master Collection Year of the Horse. Created in collaboration with the Peon Art Museum in China (dedicated to the legacy of Xu Beihong), the 42mm steel watch features a gradient red sunray dial paired with a moonphase display at 6 o’clock. The watch’s clear sapphire caseback and the self-winding L899.5 calibre reveals a gilt rotor engraved with Xu’s iconic ‘Galloping Horse’ motif. The movement is equipped with a silicon balance spring for greater time-telling reliability and stability, and promises a 72-hour power reserve. Limited to 2,026 pieces, the watch reflects both cultural reverence and technical accessibility.

Last but not least is TAG Heuer’s Carrera Chronograph Year of the Horse, which features the brand’s beloved 39mm glassbox design. Its champagne gold sunray brushed dial is accented with vibrant pops of crimson on its minute counter at 3 o’clock, date window at 9 o’clock, and lacquered central hand. Making the timepiece even more distinct is its date display where the number seven is replaced with the Chinese character for horse in a discreet nod to the animal’s place in the zodiac cycle.

On the reverse, a sapphire caseback reveals the in-house Calibre TH20-07, whose oscillating weight is embossed with a galloping horse. Couple this with an impressive 80-hour power reserve, column-wheel chronograph architecture, and a beads-of-rice bracelet engineered for comfort, and this 250-piece limited edition reinforces the brand’s racing DNA while paying an earnest tribute to Chinese heritage.
