Looking at the new Hermès Cut watch is akin to looking at an impossible object, an optical illusion that can be put on paper but never produced in real life. At first glance, the watch looks exactly as a watch should. A split second later, your mind does a double-take because, as it rightly surmises, all is not as it seems.

For one, the case is round but not quite circular, with four discreet angles to be found at its diagonal points. It’s a brand-new shape that’s a modification of its predecessors but with a thoroughly fresh perspective that brings newness and excitement. And in an industry obsessed with form and silhouette—behold the rounded octagon of Audemars Piguet’s Royal Oak; the asymmetry of Cartier’s Crash; the curved tonneaus of the Richard Milles and Franck Mullers—it could be argued that the Hermès Cut, the brand’s first-ever sports timepieces for women, is destined for greatness.

“At Hermès, we dare to bring the surprise,” says Philippe Delhotal, the creative director for La Montre Hermès. “The Hermès Cut is a watch that was born three years ago because there really was a need for it. We have the Hermès H08 for men, but we did not have an equivalent for women. So, it was a real response to something that was missing in our collection. And it’s the first time that we are doing a women’s watch with a mechanical movement.”

Equipped with the Manufacture Hermès H1912 movement, this self-winding watch offers a 50-hour power reserve that is more than sufficient for what it was designed to be: A chic, everyday watch that gets second glances. Openworked baton-shaped hour and minute hands (enhanced with Super-LumiNova) travel across the opaline, silver-toned dial to point at luminescent Arabic numerals. A luminescent seconds hand and regressed minutes track add further dimension to the dial, while the crown, positioned at the 1:30 position, sets the watch even further apart from the pack.

“The Hermès Cut has a special expression, a specific shape and character, that is part of the Hermès vocabulary of shapes,” Delhotal explains. “The most challenging aspect of designing this watch was not only finding the right balance and proportions for the shape, but also the right typography, the right dial, the right colour. Watchmaking is a very specific field where you can’t always do what you want, but we managed to do a lot of things with the watch nonetheless. I like it a lot, but I’m not objective, of course.”

Having seen, felt, and worn the watch,we have to admit that we’re not, either. The Hermès Cut, with its integrated strap, combines everyday functionality with style and comfort—but with a twist that’s clever and refined in its subtlety. With plans to expand it into a full-fledged collection, it looks like the timepiece is here to stay, and we couldn’t be more delighted.
