Having dedicated our November issue to the art of film, the team got together at our big monthly meeting to discuss the pages that you now hold in your hands. Ten minutes later, we found ourselves in the thralls of a boisterous discussion about movies with individuals of the team providing director’s-cut commentaries on hidden meanings or on-set trivia. It didn’t matter how much we tried to stay focused; we inevitably ended up getting pulled away on different tangents that dissected the merits of films that resonated with us.
That is the allure of film—the evocative blend of technology, storytelling, and artistry that has the ability to transport us far away from the humdrum of daily life. It’s magic that is not easily resisted, with some of us so captivated with the art that we’d dedicate our lives to its calling.
Our cover star, Davika Hoorne is one such individual. After seeing her neighbours attending casting calls, she begged her mother to let her go too. It’s a good thing that her mother relented. She got her break at her first audition and made an entrance at the tender age of 12. This has led to an accoladed career spanning two decades in films, television series and, of course, notable fashion collaborations with global brands like Bvlgari and Gucci. As she admitted to us, she has a weakness for beautiful things, but it’s clear that she remains hyper-focused on her craft: “If you want to succeed, you have to give it your all,” she tells us. “People go to Cannes for fashion, but I want to be there standing on the actors’ podium for my movie. That’s my dream,” the ambitious Thai actress shares in our cover story.

And she is not the only one who has given her all for the love of acting. Singapore actress and Crazy Rich Asians star Constance Lau gives an intimate glimpse into what life as an actress is like, sharing the emotional roller coaster that comes with auditions and call-backs, and the highs that come with being involved with good productions. “A stellar audition doesn’t guarantee the role—you can pour your heart into it, but there are always factors beyond your control,” she says. “But then, Crazy Rich Asians happened, and it changed everything.” Read about her journey and thoughts on why representation matters in our exclusive interview.
