On Wednesday morning, under a cloudless sky, Colombian-born Silvia Tcherassi kicked off the 40th anniversary of Madrid Fashion Week as the International Guest Designer with a sleek runway show. International and Spanish press, over two dozen clients dressed to the nines, and VIPs filled the Galería de Cristal Palacio de Cibeles, a venue that often doubles as a theatre, in the heart of Madrid.

“The name of the collection is Sorrentino—I love the colours in his movies,” Silvia Tcherassi tells ELLE. “And of course, fractal art, [which] I adore as well.” The designer, who started her career in interiors before transitioning into fashion, clearly draws from her background in creating entire worlds, a philosophy that informs every aspect of her work.

The audience gathered beneath classical architecture and a geometrically patterned glass dome ceiling as a series of all-white looks—beginning with model Hilary Rhoda in a white floor-length dress and sheer cape overlay—paraded past. However, the monochrome palette was just a prelude to rainbow of prints that followed. The rest of the collection was an explosion of colour, much like its cinematic inspiration. Mismatched stripes, leather fringe, tie-dye-inspired prints, and bold acrylic statement jewellery added a subtly architectural touch to the garments. A green-and-brown printed caftan, for instance, contrasted beautifully against the silky fabric, evoking the perfect look for both a boat in Capri or a leisurely stroll in Palm Beach.

Tcherassi, who works alongside her daughter, Sofia Espinosa (also the director of prêt-à-porter), designs for the timelessly glamorous woman. “There’s no nationality, no age,” Sofia shares with ELLE during a re-see and trunk show the following day, which was buzzing with clients who had flown in. “But [with] every sample we [create], I try the pieces [on], [Silvia] tries them [on], and I think, Where would I wear this?” She explains that she often compares fabrics and their price points to an imagined event, always keeping the client’s reality in mind. Her mother referenced the opening looks, saying she’d love to see someone wear one of the pristine white dresses on a red carpet. Together, the mother-daughter duo strikes a perfect balance between artistry and wearability in their family-run business.

The show was a significant milestone for the designer as well. Tcherassi, who is based in Miami, was honoured with the inaugural International Designer Award, presented by Venezuelan entrepreneur Carmen Busquets, for her global impact on the Hispanic-American fashion industry. Wednesday’s show also marked the 10th anniversary of her boutique in Madrid. “We opened the store 10 years ago, and I think my mother was a visionary in making that decision,” Sofia reflects. “We’ve always had a love for [Madrid], but now the fashion scene is growing, the real estate is booming, and to be able to have 10 years here with the city at its peak is really great.”

As for what’s next? The team has their sights set on expanding in their home city. “We definitely want to continue opening [new] stores,” Sofia says. “We have one in Palm Beach coming next. For us, it’s [about] opening with intention—always finding these destinations that speak to us, so we feel connected to women and to our clients.”
