Spoilers below.

After season 1 of the Netflix romantic comedy series Too Much ended with a surprise courthouse wedding for Jess (Megan Stalter) and Felix (Will Sharpe), series creator (and actress) Lena Dunham has teased that there might be more to their love story. In a post-finale interview, Dunham told The Wrap that she “would love to do another season and sort of shift it away from ‘meet cute’ and into ‘marriage story.’”

“Marriage is not the end of a love story,” Dunham continued. “In many ways, it’s the beginning, and a marriage is an incredibly complicated negotiation.”

But if Jessica and Felix will indeed have the chance to depict that marriage story, Dunham and Co. will have to do some negotiating with Netflix itself. Here’s what we know so far about a potential second chapter of the new series.

Netflix has not yet announced a renewal for Too Much, which dropped its first season on July 10. However, the cast and crew seem enthusiastic that a second chapter might be imminent, with Stalter telling The Wrap, “I love the ending [of season 1] because it’s exciting to think of…‘wait, what’s next? If they’re married, then what now? What’s going to happen?’”

Similarly, Dunham told Variety that she is “hopeful” for a season 2, but she can’t make any promises just yet. “We don’t always have control in the television industry of what our ending looks like,” she said.

What would the story be about?

Given that Felix and Jess have experienced their fair share of drama in their relationships (both current and former), Too Much season 2 would almost certainly unpack that baggage within the complex dynamic of a new marriage. As Dunham revealed to Netflix’s Tudum, she wanted the wedding in the season 1 finale to leave audiences with “lingering questions.”

“I wanted the finale to leave us inspired, but also going, ‘They haven’t known each other that long,’” she explained. “It’s that dual feeling of totally embracing it and also wondering, ‘Are they going to be divorced in three months?’” And while a quick divorce would be, uh, one way to continue the story in season 2, it seems Dunham is more interested in showcasing how these two characters, now married, might continue “bumbling toward self-awareness.”

Both Stalter and Sharpe seem eager to return for a sophomore instalment, as does Dunham herself. Joining them could include Emily Ratajkowski as Wendy Jones; Rita Wilson as Lois; Janicza Bravo as Kim; Daisy Bevan as Josie; Leo Reich as Boss; Prasanna Puwanarajah as Auggie; Richard E. Grant as Jonno Ratigan; Naomi Watts as Ann Ratigan; Dean-Charles Chapman as Gaz; Rhea Perlman as Dottie; and Andrew Rannells as James South, among others. We’ll just have to wait for Netflix to confirm any casting announcements.
