Bronze is intrinsically linked to Panerai’s history and legacy. Although the material was introduced in luxury watchmaking over a decade earlier, it was never taken seriously as an alloy for horology until Panerai debuted it on its Luminor Submersible 1950 Bronzo (PAM382) in 2011. While other watchmakers avoided the metal for its tendency to age visibly, Panerai embraced these very qualities, and repurposed oxidation and patina as part of the watch’s—and its wearer’s—unique identity.

With the release of the Luminor Marina Bronzo PAM01678, the material finally finds its way into the brand’s most recognisable collection, resulting in a watch that feels both familiar and fresh. Sized at 44mm, the warm, brushed bronze case is offset by a cool blue gradient sandwich dial. The clean dial design lets the oversized numerals, small seconds counter at 9 o’clock, and luminous accents take centre stage. Panerai’s new P.980 automatic movement is in full display on the caseback. It offers three days of power reserve, and stays true to its nautical roots with a 500m water resistance. This is a watch that was designed to be worn, worked in, and marked by time—exactly as Panerai intended.
