In a world where technology is evolving at an unprecedented pace, the youth are leading the charge in solving real-world problems through innovation. The Apple Swift Student Challenge exemplifies how the next generation of developers, creators, and entrepreneurs are not only embracing technology but also harnessing it to create impactful solutions.

Since its inception in 2020, the Swift Student Challenge has provided thousands of young developers with a platform to showcase their creativity and coding prowess. This year, out of the 350 global winners, 50 have been recognised as Distinguished Winners for their extraordinary submissions. Among these are four outstanding students from Southeast Asia (SEA) who have demonstrated remarkable talent and ingenuity.

Singapore: Tongyu Jiang, 18

A second-time winner of the Swift Student Challenge, Tongyu Jiang from Singapore is one of the 50 Distinguished Winners. Her innovative submission, "Tambourine Story", stands out for its unique approach to storytelling through gameplay. By integrating physical aspects of technology such as CoreMotion, GarageBand, and SceneKit, Tongyu has created an interactive game that takes players on a musical journey, highlighting the magic of collaborative music-making.

Reflecting on her journey, Tongyu shared: "Creating ‘Tambourine Story’ allowed me to combine my love for music and coding. It’s amazing how technology can bring stories to life in such a tangible way." Her dedication and passion for blending music with technology earned her the opportunity to present her winning Playground to Tim Cook during his recent visit to Singapore.

Indonesia: Nadya Tjandra, 21

Nadya Tjandra, a Computer Science major from BINUS University, Indonesia, entered the Swift Student Challenge for the first time this year. Her winning app playground, "Circuit Craze", is a delightful blend of education and interaction, designed to teach players about series and parallel electricity circuits through engaging gameplay. Nadya drew inspiration from a childhood memory involving her father.

"I wanted to create something that was not just fun, but also educational," Nadya explained. "Seeing players interact with the circuits and learn through play has been incredibly rewarding." Her creativity in bringing this concept to life is a testament to her problem-solving skills. Nadya's other notable projects include "Tiati," an app integrated with Apple Watch that alerts drivers if they begin to nod off, further showcasing her commitment to developing life-saving technology.

Thailand: Apiphoom Chuenchomphu, 20

From Thailand, Apiphoom Chuenchomphu is a first-year student at Chulalongkorn University. His app playground, "FitJourney", is designed for individuals on their fitness journeys, whether they are looking to stay fit or are in rehabilitation. The app, inspired by Apiphoom's grandfather who was bedridden due to a stroke, encourages movement and aims to reduce the risk of pressure sores.

"Fitness has always been a big part of my life, and I wanted to create something that could help others, especially those recovering from an injury," Apiphoom said. His ability to turn personal experiences into meaningful technology is a remarkable example of empathy-driven innovation.

Thailand: Patcharada Tawaditap, 17

Also representing Thailand is Patcharada Tawaditap, a Grade 12 student from The Prince Royal's College School. Her app playground, "Homo Sapiens", is an educational tool designed to teach children aged 8-12 about human evolution. The app features five levels, each incorporating various technologies to make learning accessible and fun.

"I believe that learning should be interactive and engaging, especially for young children," Patcharada commented. "With ‘Homo Sapiens’, I wanted to make the complex topic of evolution easy to understand and enjoyable." With features like text-to-speech, her submission is designed to help children pronounce complex evolutionary terms, making education both engaging and inclusive.

These young innovators from Southeast Asia exemplify the power of technology in the hands of those who are passionate about making a difference. Their success in the Swift Student Challenge is not just a testament to their technical skills but also their ability to think creatively and empathetically.
