Oscars 2024: There Was a Clear and Unexpected Dress Code on the Red Carpet

Red, sparkles, kaleidoscopic colour: Sorry, the 2024 Oscars red carpet hasn't heard of any of those trends. Minimal, dare we say, even quiet luxury, was the clear-cut dress code at the 96th Oscars on Sunday night. Leading the pack, Sandra Hüller, the Oscar-nominated star for Best Actress in a leading role for Anatomy of a Fall, was the epitome of grace in a velvet off-the-shoulder, svelte Schiaparelli gown.

Next to continue Hollywood's quiet (no pun intended) revert to less busy wardrobe attire, but equally impactful, came Billie Eilish in a monochrome Chanel tweed skirt and immaculately tailored blazer, with a dainty bag in tow.

In custom Balenciaga, and arguably rivalling Zendaya for the outfit of the night, Carey Mulligan ensured all eyes were on her in a strapless bespoke Balenciaga number worthy of all the praise. Clad in black opera gloves, and a tulle frou-frou skirt adding drama to her dress, Mulligan proved why minimalist is anything but boring.

Jennifer Lawrence jumped on the demure bandwagon by opting for a polka-dot, bodice dress sans sleeves, with a matching wrap. A fan of 'clean girl' makeup, the A-lister went for refined glam.

Elsewhere, Past Lives actor Greta Lee pulled off another stellar Loewe look – not a difficult feat for the ambassador who's managed to dazzle in an array of stellar outfits created by the luxury house's creative director, Jonathan Anderson.

Gladstone's championing of Indigenous talent was both chic and poignant. A collaboration between Joe Big Mountain and Gucci's creative director Sabato De Sarno, first-time Oscar nominee Gladstone's Oscars dress was adorned with exquisite quillwork jewellery in a rich navy hue.

Last, however, certainly unforgettable, Robbie got the memo for the strapless and polished dress code and donned an awe-worthy Versace number straight from the recent AW24 runway. At first glance, the dress appears to be divided into two sumptuous elements: a sparkling corset with a skirt with draping, but upon closer inspection, Robbie's gown was a dress moulded to the body like a glove, with subtle manipulation around the waist.
