Whether you’re still in denial about their return, haunted by flashbacks of your noughties’ wardrobe, or you’ve been an avid adopter of all things Y2K-fashion, there’s no denying the ballet flat is not only back but here to stay.

Now a constant feature on the feet of the celebrity and style set, including  Matilda DjerfSofia RichieElsa Hosk, and Bella and Gigi Hadid, the return of the shoe has also sparked a surprising sub-genre: the mesh ballet flat.

In keeping with the recent trend of sensual and sheer dressing, mesh ballet flats first began cropping up at luxury labels like Khaite and Alaïa, the latter’s mesh and gem-studded renditions of which continue to sell out.

Working with everything from jeans to dresses and casual settings to formal affairs (not to mention ideal for the summer heat when you’re sick of wearing the same pair of sandals day after day) the mesh ballet flat can work for all and any occasion. In fact, we firmly believe it’s the only shoe you need to get you through the season.

It’s not just the luxury brands making chic options to shop either. Below, we round up the best mesh ballet flats to shop in 2024.

1. Khaite Marcy Crystal-Embellished Ballet Flats

If you actively avoid wearing heels at all costs, the rise of the gem-adorned (in this case, Swarovski crystals) ballet flat should be welcomed with open arms with the style offering a touch of glamour to your evening look and maximum comfort.

2. Senso Dena

Sleek, sophisticated and in one of our favourite trending colours of the past year–silver–this understated style will bring a subtle air of luxury to your looks.

3. Christopher Esber Minette Ballet Flat

The bootie cut and gem-covered netting has made this edgier take on the trend a bona-fide it-girl shoe.

4. Alora Flat

Soft, sweet and alluring, this mary-jane style flat has a double layer of padding and small 1cm heel to ensure maximum comfort all day long.

5. Pia

Alias Mae’s grungy netted flats are perfect for those who find the traditional ballet style a touch too feminine.

Are Ballet Flats In Style In 2024?

It’s been roughly a year since the mesh ballet flat become the it-shoe of fashion’s elite and the trend isn’t going anywhere as we head into 2024.

Expect to see more mesh, netted and studded styles, as well as classic ballet flats, as we move into the new year.
