In a heartwarming display of unity, Singapore's fashion community is rallying behind the Down Syndrome Association (DSA) for its annual fundraising gala, Mystique. Scheduled to take place on 5 October 2024, at Heliconia Junior Ballroom, Marina Bay Sands and Expo, the event aims to raise a substantial sum of $300,000 to support individuals with Down syndrome and their families.

To commemorate the occasion, renowned fashion luminaries—such as veteran models Pat Kraal and Ibrahim Atan, fashion show producer Daniel Boey, and hair and make-up duo Tinoq Russell Goh and Dylan Chan—as well as DSA beneficiaries joined forces for a special photoshoot captured by acclaimed photographer Russel Wong.

This powerful collaboration highlights the beauty and diversity of the human spirit, showcasing the transformative power of inclusion. “Capturing the essence of this collaboration has been incredibly meaningful. The campaign isn't just about fashion—it's about celebrating the beauty of every individual and the stories they bring to the table,” remarks Wong.

DSA beneficiaries not only star in the photoshoot—to be unveiled at DSA’s centre in Bishan on 17 September—but will also take to the runway together with models from Platinum Angels Management (PAM), Singapore’s premier senior modelling agency. They will be wearing apparel sponsored by Club 21, make-up from Sephora, and accessories from Marilyn Tan Jewellery.

The gala night, attended by guest of honour Seah Kian Peng, Speaker of the Parliament of Singapore, will also feature an auction of exclusive artworks, jewellery and air tickets, plus a raffle with luxurious prizes. Additionally, attendees will receive exclusive door gifts, including handmade candles crafted by learners from DSA's Work Readiness Assisted Programme.

Under the theme of "Metamorphosis: Embrace the Becoming", Mystique promises to be an evening of transformation, inspiration, and celebration. “Mystique aligns with DSA’s vision by promoting inclusion, empowerment, and societal change. The gala is a platform to showcase the talents and potential of individuals with Down syndrome, reinforcing the message that they deserve equal opportunities. It will be a celebration of community and togetherness, as one,” expresses show producer, Brandon Barker.

In an exclusive interview with ELLE, Barker talks about the concept behind the photoshoot and fashion show.

What inspired the theme "Metamorphosis: Embrace the Becoming" for this year's Mystique gala?

The theme was inspired by the transformative journey of individuals with Down syndrome and how society’s view of them is evolving. We wanted to celebrate both their personal growth and the broader shift toward acceptance and inclusion. "Metamorphosis" represents the beauty of change, and "Embracing the Becoming" encourages us to support every stage of this journey.

How do you envision the collaboration between senior models and DSA beneficiaries impacting the public's perception of Down syndrome?

This collaboration aims to challenge and change how people see Down syndrome. By placing individuals with Down syndrome alongside fashion icons, we highlight their unique qualities and potential. The goal is to inspire broader acceptance, showing that beauty and talent go beyond traditional boundaries. We hope this encourages more people to value diversity and support a more inclusive society.

How did you select the models to participate in the campaign?

We chose supermodels who are committed to inclusivity and social impact. We wanted people who understand fashion's power to influence culture and who share our vision of celebrating diversity. It was important to find those who appreciate the beauty in differences and are passionate about using their platform to uplift individuals with Down syndrome.

How do you plan to ensure a memorable and inclusive experience for all attendees?

The evening’s programme is primarily put together by DSA’s performing groups such as drums, creative dance and speech and drama. It is all about our beneficiaries enjoying themselves alongside their caregivers, who are oftentimes overlooked, together with DSA’s sponsors, supporters and staff. It’s both a celebration and a push for ongoing change toward a more inclusive community.

Can you elaborate on the specific programs and initiatives that the funds raised at Mystique will support?

This year, DSA refreshed their strategic plans and renewed their commitment to be the national representative agency and Centre of Excellence for persons with Down syndrome, their families and the community. All funds raised will go towards supporting the DSA’s operations and programmes for persons with Down syndrome, aiding them in their journey of independence and supporting them as part of our community.

What are some of the challenges DSA faces in its efforts to support individuals with Down syndrome?

DSA strives to provide quality programmes to meet the current and future needs of the Down syndrome community and their families. With the rapid advancement in healthcare, life expectancy has increased and DSA has programmes in place to aid in the active aging of our clients. DSA also hopes to reach the wider community in Singapore, to further engage and support them as their representative agency and champion for their specific healthcare and social needs.
