Fashion's biggest night is finally here and it was nothing short of a sartorial spectacle. For this year's Met Gala, the theme "Superfine: Tailoring Black Style" analyses the role Black culture plays in shaping the fashion landscape and popular culture. A movement that emerged during 18th century Europe as a result of the slave trade and then peaking during the Harlem Renaissance in 1920s New York, Black dandyism has become a revolutionary force—a form of sartorial resistance against the confines of race, class, gender and sexuality.

Inspired by Monica L.Miller's 2009 book Slaves to Fashion: Black Dandyism and the Styling of Black Diasporic Identity, the 'Black dandy' is best described as an impeccably groomed individual who dressed in ensembles that seamlessly blended Eurocentric influences with African elements, fine tailoring and flamboyant colours. While historical figures like Beau Brummell and Julius Soubise set the tone for Dandyism, modern-day tastemakers like Dapper Dan, LaQuan Smith, Pharrell Williams and Janelle Monae continue to evolve this subversive style.

Ahead, we've curated a list of the best-dressed celebrities that graced the Met Gala carpet this year.
